Hello Parkdale tenants and members!
Hope you are enjoying the summer heat and staying cool! Thankfully outdoor pools are open late, including Sunnyside pool today till 11:45 pm.
Attend our PHJN General meeting tomorrow!
Our next monthly PHJN general meeting is tomorrow (Wednesday, July 30) at 7 pm located at Capital Espresso!
Date: Wednesday, July 30
Time: 7:00 PM – 9:00 PM
Location: Capital Espresso, 1349 Queen St W
At PHJN, we are building relationships with our neighbours and ensuring the city and developers alike understand our opposition to development that remains unaffordable! Most recently, we went to city hall to oppose the luxury condos proposed at 340-376R Dufferin Street and 2 Melbourne Avenue – which unfortunately was approved by the Toronto East York Community Council.
We will be sharing updates from our latest organizing and we invite you to join us and bring folks who are concerned about the future of Parkdale.
We will begin our meeting promptly at 7 pm – if you would like to propose any agenda items, please let us know and we can include it.
Pot banging for Palestine - action tomorrow!
PHJN joining coalition of organizations demanding that we make noise for an end to the genocide in Gaza! Banging pots and pans is a simple yet powerful way to show your solidarity with Palestine - tell your neighbours and friends to bang pots and pans from your windows, balconies, porches and streets on Wednesday, July 30th at 6 PM. PHJN will coordinate a collective action during our meeting at 7 pm – so bring your pots and sticks with you tomorrow!
Palestinian journalist, activist, and filmmaker, Bisan Owda, has shared a call to action for a world wide pot banging movement on Wednesday, July 30th. As Gazans starve to death due to a manufactured famine by the Israeli occupation, let's make noise for lifting the siege and allowing aid in the Gaza strip.
A new groundbreaking report by the Palestinian Youth Movement, World Beyond War and Arms Embargo Now has also revealed that Canada continues to send military exports to Israel, despite false claims that the federal government had paused arms sales. Let's make noise for the Canadian government to impose a full and immediate arms embargo on Israel, and to spread the word to your neighbours to read the report, send a message to your MP, and attend the urgent movement briefing on Thursday, July 31 at 7 PM.
Anyone can take part in this action - but no one can ignore it!
PHJN mission statement
For folks who may be newer to our network, here’s our mission statement :
Parkdale Housing Justice Network is fighting collectively for a Parkdale where housing is accessible and affordable for all. We are self-organizing tenants and neighbours defending the right to housing, resisting displacement of poor and working class people, and building grassroots community power. We are organizing to protect and expand deeply affordable housing through tenant-led initiatives. Housing is for living in, not for profit!
We look forward to seeing you tomorrow – fight for an affordable Parkdale with us !
In solidarity,
Parkdale Housing Justice Network
