The Issue

As a survivor of an unimaginable traumatic event, I am coming forward to share my story and seek your support to bring about a critical change in our legal system.

On 16th May 2020, I was facing the darkest moments of my life. As a coercive control victim, I was preparing to leave my abusive ex-partner and return to my hometown. Unexpectedly, a terrifying event unfolded. I was awoken in my sleep by a pain like no other, only to realize that I was being gravely sexually assaulted by him.

Upon reporting the assault, I became entangled in the drawn-out and rigorous process of bringing the case to trial. It is a recurring nightmare, the slow legal procedures constantly reviving traumatic memories, turning my life into a living torment.
The time it takes for victim-centered case like mine to be addressed within the legal system is simply unacceptable. In 2019, the average time for a crown court case in England and Wales was 525 days. In March 2024 the number of Sexual offence cases now stands at 10,141 196% rise from 3019. This prolonged process forces survivors like me to endure continued emotional suffering and denies us the justice we desperately need.

My first trial date was set May 2024. 4years to the week of the assault taking place. That was postponed 1week before the commencement. Due to the judge being needed for another case. The trial was moved to 7th October. I received a call on the 4th of October to once again tell me the trial was postponed. This time due to the ongong trial being extended therefore not leaving enough time for mine to go ahead. I was also informed that it could not move to the week after as there is no judge available. We are now 4.5years after the horrific event took place.

Keir Starmer promised to make trial wait times shorter back in 2023. I propose the government start to listen to victims and get all cases to trial and sentencing in 18 months maximum.

The current system deteriorates the mental health of victims, discourages reporting, and prevents healing. We need a swift change and we need discussing now!

Therefore, we request that you stand with us in this dreadful ordeal. Please sign this petition to accelerate the trial process for victim-centered assaults within our legal system so that victims can get on the path to recovery sooner. Your contribution can be the change we need to see.
