The Issue

It deeply saddens me to see the proposed law in Turkey endorsing the killing of stray animals. This is a gross violation of animal rights and general compassion. It is important to remember that stray animals are not a problem, but victims of human neglect.

There are approximately 150,000 stray dogs in Istanbul alone, each one of these possessing the right to life and respect (source: The Guardian). At a time when animal welfare organizations worldwide are moving towards humane control methods like Sterilization, Vaccination and Release programs, advocating for the killing of stray animals is nothing short of regressive.

Not only is this proposed law inhumane, but it's also ineffective. According to the Humane Society International, killing stray animals does not control their population. On the contrary, it may lead to a 'vacuum effect', where new animals move in to fill the space left by those killed, leading to quick replenishment of their numbers.

In conclusion, we ask the Turkish authorities to reconsider this law and opt for more humane solutions to manage the stray animal problem such as Sterilisation, Vaccination and Release programs. Animals' lives matter, and it is our moral responsibility as a society to protect and respect them. Please, sign this petition and show your support for the lives of stray animals in Turkey.
