Stop the Killing of Marda Loop's Street Trees

The Issue

I am a resident of Marda Loop, Calgary and have been fortunate to witness the beauty and uniqueness that our old trees bring to our neighborhood. These trees are not just plants; they are landmarks that create a pro-human space, contributing to our well-being and quality of life.

We decorate them in the winter, we run to them for shade in the summer, and we bear witness to the beauty they bring to our everyday experience of our community.

Recently, the City of Calgary has sanctioned the removal of MANY of these old street trees along Garrison Gate SW despite many of them being outside of the project boundary of the Marda Loop Main Streets Project. This action threatens the aesthetic appeal and environmental balance in our community. According to a study by the University of British Columbia (UBC), urban trees play a significant role in reducing air pollution and improving mental health among city dwellers.

Moreover, these historic trees are part of Marda Loop's heritage. They stand as silent witnesses to the evolution of our little pocket of this city over decades. Their removal is not only an environmental issue but also one concerning cultural preservation.

We urge local authorities in Calgary to reconsider this decision and implement measures for preserving these precious natural assets instead. By signing this petition, you're standing up for both nature conservation and cultural heritage preservation in Marda Loop. Please sign this petition today!
