I attended a meeting at Minister Mickelberg's office in Buderim with Kas Samaraweera this morning. We discussed the changes that South Australia has made and how best to make the changes in Queensland. He addressed the issue of fatalities and accidents involving trucks in Queensland as partly infrastructure which will be addressed with the upgrade to Bruce Highway. I mentioned the issuing of MC licences to overseas drivers and their lack of experience, speaking english, respect and using the two way to communicate plus knowing how to drive on our highways. We discussed the way this could be monitored and further training to be done. He also said that they are interested to see how the legislation introduced into South Australia is working. I raised the question about training schools offering 2 day courses to obtain a MC licence in Queensland. Ways to make sure everyone who has already been given MC licence are actually trained right maybe a test every couple of years at time of medical. He is concerned about the gap of experienced drivers from the ones who have had generations of experience versus younger drivers. How do we address this issue? He felt perhaps the shortage of drivers in the gap i.e. middle age experienced drivers may worsen. He will be discussing what we talked about with the Minister Mickelberg when he gets back from Curra today and get back to me. He listened and agree change is necessary for safety of all road users. I was happy with the discussion. Now we just have to wait and see what action takes place.
