The issue

To: The United Nations and the governments of UN member states

On October 8, 2025, the Islamic Republic of Iran is scheduled to be elected to the UN Human Rights Council's Advisory Committee by acclamation, without a vote.

This decision is in direct contradiction to the principles of the United Nations and UNHRC Resolution 6/102, which stipulates that only candidates of high moral standing, independence, and impartiality should be considered for human rights bodies.

The proposed candidate,

Afsaneh Nadipour,

does not meet these requirements at all.

During the nationwide "Woman, Life, Freedom" protests in Iran, in which hundreds of innocent people were killed or arrested, Nadipour sided with the regime.

She condemned international support for the courageous women's protests as "insincere and politically motivated" – thereby indirectly defending the violent actions of the security forces.

Such behavior is incompatible with the standards of a human rights advocate.

Iran has been criticized for years for serious human rights violations:

Repression against women, ethnic and religious minorities

Suppression of freedom of expression, freedom of the press, and freedom of assembly

Arbitrary detention, torture, and political persecution

Use of the death penalty, including against minors

Brutal crackdown on peaceful demonstrations

Our demands:

No election of the Iranian regime or any of its representatives, like Afsaneh Nadipour, to the Advisory Committee of the UN Human Rights Council

A clear and public rejection of this nomination by democratic member states

Compliance with the requirements of UNHRC Resolution 6/102

Transparent and human rights-based selection criteria for UN Human Rights Council bodies

Why is this important?

A regime that systematically violates the rights of its own population should not be allowed to participate in decisions on global human rights issues. The election of a representative who justifies the crackdown on protesters would be a serious setback for the credibility of the Human Rights Council.
