The Issue

We are deeply concerned about the Afghan government’s reported plan to ban the internet nationwide.

Today, the internet is not a luxury but an essential lifeline. Cutting off access would devastate education, isolate families, and cripple countless livelihoods that depend on online connections and markets. For a country already facing severe economic challenges, this step would have catastrophic social and economic consequences.

The internet keeps Afghans informed, enables young people to learn, and allows businesses to operate and grow. Denying this access would silence voices, stifle opportunity, and deepen isolation.

We call on Afghan leaders to abandon any plan that severs the nation from the digital world. Instead, they should foster an environment where everyone—women and men alike—can thrive, learn, and work freely.

Please add your name to this petition to show that Afghans and friends of Afghanistan everywhere stand united in defense of internet access. Together we can insist on staying connected to the world and to each other.
