Alastair Carmichael MP has now tabled his Family Visas (Minimum Income) Bill which is available on the Parliament website.
The bill is known as a Private Member’s Bill (PMB), a PMB in Parliament is a type of public bill that can be introduced by either members of the House of Commons or House of Lords who are not Ministers. Less parliamentary time is given to such bills and as a result only a minority of PMBs actually become law.
However, support for MPs for a specific PMB can be helpful in signaling the opposition to a specific policy (as in this case the increases to the MIR) so it could still lead to change and/or more focus on the policy.
Therefore, here is what you could do:
Write to your MP:
• Telling about your experience or your loved ones’ experience of the rules.
• Asking them to support the Family Visas (Minimum Income) Bill (available here: https://bills.parliament.uk/bills/3684
• Tell them that you would be available to meet with them to explain in person the impacts the rules are having on your life and on your family life
• Explain about the availability of our community to support their constituents with questions around the MIR policy and more in general to receive peer support from other people who have been or are going through the visa path.
PLEASE KEEP SIGNING AND SHARING
