The novel Haunting Adeline by H.D. Carlton has generated significant controversy due to its depiction of stalking, kidnapping, sexual violence, coercion, and psychological abuse. While the novel is marketed as a work of dark romance intended for adults, many readers and critics have expressed concern that abusive behaviours are presented within a romantic narrative.

We believe this novel should not be adapted into a mainstream film or television series.

A screen adaptation would reach a far wider audience than the original book. Even with age ratings, trailers, promotional material, short clips, and social media edits would circulate widely online, making it far easier for younger audiences and those unfamiliar with the novel to encounter its content. Film and television also have a unique cultural influence, shaping conversations about relationships, consent, and healthy boundaries on a much larger scale than books.

Our concerns include:

• The potential romanticization of stalking and coercive control.
• Presenting sexual violence within a romantic narrative.
• Reinforcing harmful misconceptions about consent and abusive relationships.
• Trivializing the experiences of survivors of domestic and sexual violence.
• Bringing themes of extreme abuse to a mainstream audience through visual media.

Our concern is not with the existence of dark fiction itself. Adults are free to choose what they read, and literature has long explored disturbing and controversial subjects. However, adapting Haunting Adeline into a high-profile film or television production would significantly amplify these themes, giving them a platform far beyond the book’s existing readership.

Stories have the power to shape public conversations and influence cultural perceptions. While many films and television series responsibly explore trauma and abuse by highlighting their devastating consequences, we believe Haunting Adeline is not an appropriate choice for a mainstream adaptation because of the way many readers interpret its central relationship.

We respectfully urge H.D. Carlton, the producers, investors, distributors, and everyone involved in this project to reconsider moving forward with this adaptation. There are countless stories that explore complex relationships and difficult subjects without risking the romanticization of abuse.
