The Issue

I am writing this with a heavy heart to bring attention to a devastating issue affecting the residents of Ibadan South West, Nigeria. Years ago, the government proposed the construction of a circular road to ease traffic congestion. However, this project has veered far off course, resulting in the potential displacement of millions of residents.

The circular road with setback was originally 75m (30m for the road and 45 as setback) . It was later expanded to 150m (30m for the road and 120m as setback). The acquisition was illegally expanded to 1000m by the current government led by Governor Seyi Makinde.

This is unacceptable by the populace.

Recent developments have expanded the planned corridor to an alarming 1000 meters across 6 local governments of Ibadan land . This vast expansion will not only decimate homes but also deforest lands, destroy farmlands, and erode the cultural and community fabric of our neighbourhoods. This project is not just about infrastructure; it's about human lives and livelihoods—worth millions of naira at stake.

There are countless stories, like mine, where families are living in fear of becoming homeless. Each meter added to the project corridor threatens the home we've built with our hard-earned money, our community bonds, and our sense of security. No more corridor! We cannot let bureaucratic mistakes and mismanagement force us out of the homes we've cherished for decades.

Concrete and actionable alternatives exist. The government can still honor 150 meter plan or explore alternative routes that do not impact residential areas. Impact assessments and community consultations must guide any such massive projects.

The government insists on the 1000m while just 30m is to used for the road. The remaining 850m (except the 120m setback) is already sold to money bags (Estate developers) to build the same houses, schools, hospitals, companies and homes that were demolished. This is cruelty and the people are saying: no more to corridor.

We cannot endanger lives in the name of progress. Infrastructure development should be about improving lives, not destroying them. Therefore, I plead with the government and relevant authorities to reconsider this ill-conceived expansion and adopt a plan that protects both the people and the environment.
