As a young person who enjoys the freedom of connecting with friends, sharing experiences, and learning new things on social media platforms, I am deeply alarmed by the EU's recent attempts to restrict social media access for individuals under the age of 16. This move not only undermines our freedom but also limits our ability to express ourselves in a digital age where social media is an integral part of life.

With the increasing digitalisation of our world, social media acts as a crucial tool for teenagers to engage, learn, and grow. While concerns around digital safety are valid, outrightly banning or severely restricting access is not the solution. According to a report by the European Commission's Joint Research Centre, 82% of teenagers in Europe use social media regularly, which acts as a platform for education, entertainment, and community involvement.

Implementing a blanket restriction on social media usage for those under 16 could lead to unintended consequences, such as increased harassment and bullying in less regulated environments or forcing young people to provide false information to access essential platforms.

Instead, I propose that the EU invests in comprehensive digital literacy programs that educate both parents and children about online safety and data privacy.

The voices of Europe's youth deserve to be heard in these discussions. We should be working towards empowering young individuals with the tools they need to navigate the digital world safely, rather than taking away their freedom. Let's push for policies that protect young users while respecting their rights to access and share information.

Please join me in opposing the EU's attempt to restrict under-16s from using social media. Stand up for our freedom and our rights to an open digital world. Sign this petition and let the EU know that our voices matter. Freedom above all.
