It has been reported by the Associated Press that President Donald Trump plans to rename the Persian Gulf in official U.S. usage. We, the undersigned, strongly oppose this politically motivated and historically inaccurate decision to refer to the Persian Gulf as the "Arabian Gulf."

The name Persian Gulf has been used consistently in maps, official documents, and academic references for over 2,500 years—from ancient scholars like Herodotus and Ptolemy to modern U.S. Navy charts and United Nations records. Any attempt to alter a name with such deep historical, cultural, and geographical roots is unacceptable and must be reversed.

Throughout history, seas have typically been named after the lands adjacent to them. The body of water that borders the entire southern coast of Iran has long been called the Persian Gulf precisely because it lies along the Iranian province of Fars (or Pars), and because the ancient Persians were among the earliest regional powers to engage with the wider world.

Greek historians such as Arrian and Strabo referred to this body of water as Persikōn Kólpos—the Persian Gulf. In Roman times, it was known as Aquarum Persico, meaning “the waters of Persia.” Similarly, Arab historians from the earliest centuries of Islamic era used names like Bahr Fars, Bahr al-Farsi, or Khalij Fars—all meaning “the Persian Gulf.” These references span languages, civilizations, and centuries, consistently affirming the rightful name of this sea.

Why This Matters:

1. Historical Legacy – For over 2,500 years, the body of water between Iran and the Arabian Peninsula has been universally recognized as the Persian Gulf in ancient texts, maps, and official documents.

 

2. International Recognition – The United Nations and other global authorities have repeatedly confirmed Persian Gulf as the only valid name.

 

3. Cultural Erasure – Renaming the Persian Gulf disregards centuries of historical record and undermines the cultural heritage of the Iranian people.

 

4. Regional Tensions – This unnecessary and inflammatory change risks deepening divisions in an already fragile and volatile region.

Reject this politically driven name change.

 

Reaffirm existing UN resolutions recognizing Persian Gulf as the historically and legally correct designation.

 

Defend the integrity of historical geography against revisionism and political convenience.

Geography is not negotiable. History must not be rewritten for short-term political gain.

جلوی تحریف تاریخ را بگیریم — «خلیج فارس» باید نام واقعی خود را حفظ کند

 

طبق گزارش خبرگزاری آسوشیتدپرس، دونالد ترامپ، رئیس‌جمهور ایالات متحده، قصد دارد در اسناد رسمی آمریکا، نام «خلیج فارس» را به «خلیج عربی» تغییر دهد. ما، امضاکنندگان این کارزار، قویاً با این تصمیم سیاسی و فاقد پشتوانه‌ی تاریخی مخالفت می‌کنیم.

 

نام «خلیج فارس» بیش از ۲۵۰۰ سال است که در نقشه‌ها، متون رسمی، و منابع دانشگاهی استفاده می‌شود—از دانشمندانی چون «هِرودوت» و «بطلمیوس» در دوران باستان تا نقشه‌های نیروی دریایی ایالات متحده و اسناد رسمی سازمان ملل در دوران مدرن. هرگونه تلاشی برای تغییر این نام با ریشه‌های عمیق تاریخی، فرهنگی و جغرافیایی، اقدامی غیرقابل قبول و نیازمند بازنگری فوری است.

 

در طول تاریخ، دریاها معمولاً بر اساس سرزمین‌های هم‌جوارشان نام‌گذاری شده‌اند. این پهنه‌ی آبی که در جنوب ایران قرار دارد، «خلیج فارس» نامیده شده است چون هم‌مرز با استان فارس ایران است، و نیز به این دلیل که ایرانیان باستان، یعنی پارسیان، از نخستین تمدن‌هایی بودند که با دنیای غرب تماس برقرار کردند.

 

مورخان یونانی مانند آریان و استرابون این دریا را با عنوان

Persikōn Kólpos

 یعنی «خلیج فارس» ثبت کرده‌اند. در دوران روم آن‌را

 Aquarum Persico 

یا «آب‌های پارس» می‌نامیدند. همچنین از نخستین سده‌های دوران اسلامی، جغرافی‌دانان عرب از نام‌هایی چون «بحر فارس»، «بحر الفارسی» و «خلیج فارس» استفاده کرده‌اند. این شواهد، که از دل زبان‌ها و تمدن‌های گوناگون آمده‌اند، گواهی استوار بر نام واقعی این خلیج هستند.

چرا این موضوع اهمیت دارد؟

 

۱. میراث تاریخی: بیش از دو هزار و پانصد سال است که این خلیج در متون کهن، نقشه‌ها و اسناد رسمی بین‌المللی، با نام «خلیج فارس» شناخته شده است.

۲. پذیرش جهانی: سازمان ملل متحد و بسیاری از نهادهای بین‌المللی بارها بر درستی و یگانگیِ نام «خلیج فارس» تأکید کرده‌اند.

۳. محو فرهنگی: تغییر این نام، نه تنها سندیت تاریخی را نادیده می‌گیرد بلکه میراث فرهنگی مردم ایران را زیر سؤال می‌برد.

۴. تنش‌های منطقه‌ای: این اقدام تحریک‌آمیز و غیرضروری می‌تواند به افزایش تنش‌ها در منطقه‌ای که پیشاپیش ناپایدار است دامن بزند.

درخواست ما:

ما از دولت ایالات متحده، سازمان ملل متحد، و جامعه جهانی می‌خواهیم:

 

با این تحریف سیاسی و ناموجه مخالفت کنند.

 

قطعنامه‌های موجود سازمان ملل را که نام «خلیج فارس» را به رسمیت می‌شناسند، مجدداً تأیید کنند.

 

از تغییرات سیاسی و تحریف‌گرانه در جغرافیای تاریخی جلوگیری کنند.

این کارزار را امضا کنید تا در برابر تحریف تاریخ بایستیم و از نام حقیقی «خلیج فارس» دفاع کنیم.

 

جغرافیا قابل چانه‌زنی نیست. تاریخ را نباید فدای منافع زودگذر سیاسی کرد.
