Stop the Dumping: Clean Up Harrow Leisure Centre Site & Investigate £348k Taxpayer Bill
The Issue
Harrow Councillors have revealed the shocking £348,000 taxpayer cost of clearing up the Harrow Leisure Centre site “dumping ground” due to the Council's neglect in fly-tipping enforcement.
This area, adjacent to the Leisure Centre Car Park in Wealdstone, has in recent years been used by the local special needs transport vehicle fleet, however since their relocation 18 months ago in July 2023 it has become an illegal dumping ground, left to fester and rot, with waste accruing, hazardous building and construction materials discarded, and a potentially contaminated pond that could pose a serious public health risk.
In February, the Conservative run Council increased Council Tax by yet another 5%, however local residents were shocked to understand that the first £348,000 of the upcoming Council Tax increase will be spent clearing this neglected, unenforced site. This money could have been spent on more social carers, cleaner streets, filling in more potholes or tackling anti-social behaviour in our communities.
For all the Council communications talk of enforcing fly-tipping, why has this site been left neglected for 18months leaving residents to foot the bill?
The Conservative run Council should not waste taxpayers’ money in this way.
We the undersigned demand:
- The site is cleared immediately removing all hazardous waste and addressing all environmental & public health risks.
- The Council to immediately investigate and prosecute those involved.
