It is the bartenders, performers, DJs, and security staff keeping nightlife alive.

It is the residents, tourists, and visitors who choose to spend their evenings supporting local businesses instead of staying home or driving to suburban entertainment districts.

Now, rising parking rates threaten all of that.

Increasing parking costs may seem small on paper, but for thousands of people who work, live, and socialize downtown, these increases create another financial burden at a time when affordability is already a major concern.

Parking is not optional infrastructure in Orlando. Our city is heavily car dependent, and accessible parking directly impacts whether people choose to come downtown at all.

Higher parking rates will:

• Reduce foot traffic for small businesses
• Hurt restaurants, bars, entertainment venues, and retail shops
• Impact tipped hospitality workers and nightlife employees
• Push customers toward suburban venues with free parking
• Create additional financial strain for residents and visitors
• Discourage participation in Orlando’s growing arts, music, and LGBTQ+ communities

Downtown businesses have worked tirelessly to rebuild momentum and create a safer, more welcoming environment. Punishing visitors and workers with higher parking fees undermines those efforts.

We are asking the City of Orlando and downtown leadership to pause any parking rate increases and instead work collaboratively with local businesses and residents on solutions that support growth, accessibility, and public safety.

• Expanded parking validation partnerships for businesses operating downtown and their employees
• More free parking periods during off-peak hours
• Incentives for garage utilization
• Investments in safety, cleanliness, and transportation access

PROPOSED CHANGES FROM THE CITY:

• On-street parking would increase from $1/hour to $2/hour for the first 2 hours
• On-street parking could increase progressively up to 6 hours
• City garage and lot parking would increase from $2/hour to $3/hour after the first 4 hours
• Daily parking maximums would increase from $15 to $20
• Event parking maximums could double from $10 to $20
• Monthly parking passes would increase
• Parking enforcement hours would extend from 6 PM to 8 PM
• Standard parking tickets would increase from $27 to $32
• “Life/safety” parking violations would increase from $37 to $57
• Boot fees would increase from $100 to $120

The city says the proposal would generate approximately $5.5 million annually and help fund parking modernization and garage upgrades.
