Stop the Displacement of West Prep children

The Issue

Now is the time to act! Please help us save West Prep from being removed from our beautiful space located in the heart of our community.  Sign this petition and contact your elected officials, the District 3 Superintendent office, and the NYC Chancellors office.

As a parent, student, former student, and/or supporter of West Prep Academy, I am deeply concerned about the proposed displacement of hundreds of children from their beloved school building to an inadequate facility.

NYCDOE and District 3 Superintendent's plan calls to move West Prep Academy, into an abandoned and archaic catholic school building to satisfy the space needs of an encroaching Russian program in the co-located elementary school 145.  The newly proposed  building has no access to a playground, schoolyard, separate gymnasium, adequate cafeteria, and auditorium.  Many parents have toured the facility already and have described it as "depressing," a "dungeon," "archaic" and "dark." The Ascension Catholic school lacks the necessary features for supporting learning, social-emotional development, and safety.

West Prep is a diverse and thriving middle school. The students and staff are currently happy and comfortable in their current space. As a NYC showcase school, West Prep has modeled ways in which they educate every child regardless of ability or disability, including the growing population of asylum seeking families, and special education students. Our children currently have access to ample technology, clean classrooms, a gold standard inclusive playground— and we do NOT need to move for ANY reason- especially to accommodate a growing Russian language program that does NOT serve our immediate community surrounding the school.

This plan threatens to disrupt our children's education and well-being. Our students in our neighborhood deserve an appropriate building that is safe, welcoming, technologically advanced, and has ample space for them to play.

According to data from the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES), students perform better academically in schools that are in good physical condition compared to those in poor condition. By displacing our students into substandard facilities, we risk compromising their academic performance.

We urge you to reconsider this decision on behalf of all parents whose children attend schools within District 3 in Upper West Side Manhattan New York NY USA. We ask that you prioritize providing quality educational environments over budgetary concerns or creating spaces for families that are outside of our district.

Please sign this petition if you believe in keeping West Prep Titan Strong!
