Stop the digital sexualisation, exploitation and grooming of minors in Australia

The issue

Every quarter of Australian girls will experience online sexual grooming from an adult before they reach the age of 18. Shockingly, the majority of these victims fall prey to this crime as young as 11 years old. While this statistic is chilling enough, it represents only the tip of the iceberg. My own friends, cousin, and even my 12-year-old sister have suffered due to this growing menace. It has become intensely personal, watching those I love become statistics in these horrifying figures.

The links between minor sexual assault and reports of underage grooming paint a grave picture in our society. Almost one in ten Australian children face the horrific reality of being sexually forced into acts against their will. Even more, one in five endure non-contact sexual abuse from their groomers. This is a disturbing reality that demands immediate action.

The safety and future of our children are at stake. Digital platforms, while revolutionary, are being manipulated by predators who exploit the innocence and trust of our youth. We must bolster our cyber laws and implement stricter regulations to shield our children from these online predators.

To tackle this critical issue, we call on the Government of Australia to:

1. Launch more rigorous digital platforms oversight and provide legal frameworks that mandate digital corporations to actively monitor and report suspicious activities.

2. Develop comprehensive educational programs in schools to raise awareness among children, equipping them to recognise and report grooming attempts confidently.

3. Increase funding to law enforcement agencies to enhance capabilities in tracking and prosecuting online predators more swiftly.

4. Encourage technology companies to research and employ sophisticated algorithms designed to detect and deter grooming behaviour across digital platforms.

Our children deserve to grow up in a world where they feel safe and secure, both online and offline. Together, we can foster an environment where every child can navigate the digital world without fear of exploitation. Join us in calling on legislation and digital corporations to protect Australia's youth by signing and sharing this petition. Let’s take a stand to end the digital sexualisation, exploitation, and grooming of minors.
