Stop the development of a data center in Cherry Valley
The Issue
I call Cherry Valley, Illinois, my home, a peaceful village that has provided my family and me with a harmonious living for many years. Its lush greens, serene environment, and the friendly faces that greet us at every turn make it not only a place where we reside but a community we owe our heart to. However, this tranquility is under threat by the proposal to build a large data center in Cherry Valley.
Data centers, while a necessity in our digital age, come with their own set of challenges and impacts. These facilities are known for their heavy electricity consumption and substantial water use for cooling operations. According to the United States Department of Energy, a data center can use up to 100 times the electricity of a large commercial office building. Not only does this significantly increase the carbon footprint, but also strains local resources. In Cherry Valley, a village reliant on its natural resources and with limited infrastructure capabilities, such a demand could be catastrophic.
Furthermore, the construction of this data center threatens to disrupt the ecosystem and landscape that we cherish. The noise pollution during construction and operation, the potential for increased traffic, and the strain on our local services, including emergency services, could drastically alter the quality of life that Cherry Valley stands for. A 2021 study by the Environmental Protection Agency underscores the impact of industrial noise pollution on both wildlife and human health.
We aren't opposed to technological advancement, but believe that Cherry Valley is not suitable for a facility of this magnitude. The location of such centers needs to be in areas with the infrastructure to support them without devastating consequences to the local community and the environment.
We urge the Cherry Valley Village Board and relevant authorities to reconsider this decision. We propose a comprehensive environmental impact assessment before any further decisions are taken and suggest alternative locations where the infrastructure and environmental consequences can be managed effectively.
Let us protect the essence and integrity of Cherry Valley. I invite you to join me in opposing this development to preserve our beloved village for future generations. Please sign this petition to voice our collective concern and to prevent the construction of the data center in Cherry Valley. Together, we can make our voices heard and protect our community.
