The Issue

In the heart of Hayfork, California, our small and close-knit community faces a significant threat: the proposed development of a 5G Verizon tower. For many of us, Hayfork is more than just a town; it is our home, surrounded by breathtaking natural beauty and a tight community that supports one another.

The proposed 5G tower, if allowed to proceed, threatens to disrupt the very fabric of our community. The installation of such infrastructure is not only an eyesore in our picturesque environment but poses health risks associated with prolonged exposure to electromagnetic frequency radiation. Studies from the World Health Organization and other health bodies have raised concerns regarding these risks, which must not be taken lightly, especially when it comes to the wellbeing of our children and vulnerable populations.

Beyond health concerns, the presence of the tower can also disturb the local wildlife. Our town prides itself on its surrounding natural landscapes which are home to diverse species that may be adversely affected by the installation of a high-frequency mobile tower. The ecosystems here are fragile, and a development of this nature could lead to unintended disruptions in natural patterns and wildlife behavior.

Another negative is the decline in residential property values. Real estate studies and surveys from organizations like the National Association of Realtors suggest several ways 5G infrastructure can affect your investment: Market Devaluation: Some studies have shown that homes within the immediate vicinity (usually within 200–500 meters) of a visible tower can see a price reduction ranging from 2% to 10%. In extreme cases where the tower is particularly obtrusive, realtors have reported decreases as high as 20%. Reduced Buyer Pool: A significant portion of home buyers (up to 94% in some surveys) state they are less interested in properties with a nearby cell tower. This "stigma" can lead to homes sitting on the market longer. Seller Disclosure Requirements: In some jurisdictions, the presence of a nearby cell tower must be explicitly disclosed during a sale, which can immediately flag the property as "less desirable" to certain buyers.

As a community, we must question if the benefits brought by a 5G tower truly outweigh the potential damage to our environment and communal health. Many of us moved to or stayed in Hayfork to escape urban developments and to enjoy a slice of peace and co-existence with nature, ideals that a towering structure like this one threatens to undermine.

We urge the decision-makers at Verizon and local governmental bodies to listen to the voices of those they serve.

The public meeting for tower approval is rescheduled for 6:00pm, March 12, 2026 @ the Public Library in Weaverville, Ca. Please show up in support if you can and join us in standing against this development.
