It’s Holly here - I’m the partner of Marcus Decker, the peaceful climate activist who is still in prison and being threatened with deportation. 

I’m very glad to be able to share with you that the UN has spoken out about the extreme prison sentences that Marcus and his fellow protester Morgan Trowland received. This news made it into the BBC, Guardian, Sky News and Today Programme this morning and the list keeps growing.

In August, Dr Ian Fry, the UN’s special rapporteur for climate change and human rights, wrote a letter to our government. In it, he said he was “particularly concerned” about the prison sentences received by Marcus and Morgan, which were “significantly more severe than previous sentences imposed for this type of offending in the past”. 

He then added, “I am gravely concerned about the potential flow-on effect that the severity of the sentences could have on civil society and the work of activists, expressing concerns about the triple planetary crisis and, in particular, the impacts of climate change on human rights and on future generations.”

The UN gave the UK government 60 days to respond. And they never did. So his letter is now available to the public.

Thanks to this media coverage, thousands of people will now have heard of Marcus’s shocking prison sentence for the first time. But much of the coverage did not actually mention Marcus’s looming deportation. So it could make all the difference if you could share this news piece with everyone you know and ask them to sign this petition to stop Marcus from being deported.

The right to protest is of course important but our right to breathable air, growable soil, drinkable water and overall a livable planet is even more important. Marcus shouldn't have had to protest for these basic human rights!
