Stop the Demolition of Buckskin and South Ham: Protect 4,600 Homes and Our Community
The Issue
Stop the Demolition of Homes in Buckskin and South Ham — Protect Our Community
Please help protect Buckskin and South Ham
Buckskin and South Ham are more than places on a map. They are home to thousands of people, families, older residents, tenants and homeowners who have built their lives, friendships and communities here.
Regeneration should improve our neighbourhoods without unnecessarily destroying the homes and communities that already exist.
The proposed regeneration of Buckskin and South Ham raises serious questions about the future of existing homes, the potential displacement of residents, affordable housing, and the long-term impact on our community.
Around 4,600 homes are located across these neighbourhoods. We need clear, reliable information about which properties may be affected, what changes are being considered, and what alternatives to demolition are possible.
We believe residents deserve transparency, meaningful involvement and a genuine say in the future of their neighbourhoods.
What we are asking for
We call on Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council, Sovereign Network Group and Sovereign Hill Partnership to:
- Prioritise refurbishment over demolition wherever reasonably possible. Publish a transparent assessment comparing the costs, benefits, environmental impacts and long-term outcomes of renovating existing homes against replacing them.
- Provide clear information about affected properties. Publish accessible maps and details identifying which streets and homes could be affected, the reasons for any proposed demolition, and the current status of each proposal.
- Protect residents from unnecessary displacement. Explore every reasonable alternative before considering compulsory purchase or the displacement of homeowners and tenants.
- Guarantee fair housing arrangements. Set out how affected residents would be rehoused, including commitments concerning affordability, suitable property sizes, tenure, accessibility and the ability to remain within their local community.
- Give residents a meaningful voice. Ensure residents can influence the options being developed before key decisions are made, with accessible consultations, published feedback and clear explanations of how community views have influenced the plans.
- Protect our community's character and environment. Assess the impact on established neighbourhoods, local services, schools, transport, green spaces, trees and community facilities.
- Publish a transparent timetable and accountability framework. Explain what decisions have been made, what remains under consideration, who is responsible, and how residents can challenge decisions or raise concerns.
Regeneration must work for the people who live here
We recognise that some homes may need substantial repairs and that investment in our neighbourhoods can bring real benefits. Residents deserve warm, safe, energy-efficient homes, improved facilities and a better local environment.
But improvement should not automatically mean demolition. Existing homes should be properly assessed, and refurbishment should be given serious consideration wherever it can deliver good-quality, sustainable housing.
For residents who have lived here for decades, the uncertainty surrounding the future of their homes can affect family life, finances, retirement plans and their sense of security. Losing a home can also mean losing nearby relatives, friendships, support networks and connections to local services.
These are not minor considerations. They must be central to decisions about the future of our neighbourhoods.
Our request
We ask the council and regeneration partners to listen to residents, publish the evidence behind their proposals and demonstrate that alternatives to demolition have been properly explored.
We want regeneration that improves homes and neighbourhoods while protecting residents, preserving community connections and avoiding unnecessary displacement.
Please sign this petition to support a transparent, resident-centred approach to the future of Buckskin and South Ham.
Please also share it with neighbours, friends, family and anyone concerned about the future of our community.
Our homes. Our community. Our future. Residents must have a meaningful say.
