The Issue

Their blue eyes and big ears may be irresistible, but there is nothing humane about holding and taking a selfie with a tiger cub.

Cub petting operations charge the public a fee to handle and take photos with baby tigers, lions, and other wild cats. They need a steady stream of cubs to make money, so females are constantly bred and their babies are taken from them immediately after birth. The cubs can only be used for a matter of weeks, so they are subjected to long hours of handling by paying customers. Cubs who resist are often abused by their handlers, who may drag, punch, and slap them.

Once the cubs grow too big and dangerous for handling, they are no longer profitable. They may then be kept for breeding, sent to roadside zoos and private owners, or may simply “disappear.” Many of these big cats suffer serious, lifelong health problems – few will end up in accredited sanctuaries where they get the care that they so desperately need.

Please help the Big Cat Sanctuary Alliance end this cruel practice! Pledge to never engage in cub petting by signing this petition today.

The petition will be used to support efforts to end the exploitation of innocent cubs and their mothers, including in support of the Big Cat Public Safety Act. This federal bill would prohibit the private ownership of captive big cats and end cub petting nationwide. Click here to find out how you can help pass the Big Cat Public Safety Act.

More actions you can take:

  • Avoid any place that offers petting and photo sessions with cubs.
  • Do not patronize circuses and fairs that feature big cat acts.
  • If there is a big cat sanctuary in your area, make sure that they do not breed or allow direct contact with their animals. If they do, they are not a true sanctuary!
  • The sign of a true sanctuary is one that is accredited by the Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries (GFAS) or a member of the Big Cat Sanctuary Alliance.
