Residents of St. Lucie County Florida are opposing a coquina rock mine that threatens our way of life. This 80 acre (total 164 with buffer) mine plans to dig 50 feet down and haul 500,000 tons of fill dirt and coquina rock each year for 7 to 10 years by applying for a conditional use permit to dig in an agricultural zoning district. Residents are concerned about

- Silica Dust found in coquina rock that contains a carcinogen which can cause lung cancer. Using Stokes Law for Fluid Particle Forces, a 5 micron particle of silica dust can travel up to 9 miles in a wind speed of 12.4 mph. This could lead to far-outreaching consequences for neighboring communities and schools.

- The estimated 96 dump trucks traveling to and from the mine and the danger of traffic accidents and roadway damage.

- Environmental related issues such as water quality contamination and changes to the water table that can happen in the digging, dewatering and discharge process.

- Disruption of wildlife and livestock as they are forced out or put in danger by the new truck traffic.

- Noise and light pollution in a community where families and agricultural businesses require the peace and quiet of the rural amenities.
