The Wensum Valley is the home to one of only 210 chalk streams in the world.

Chalk streams are an irreplaceable reminder of our past, and were created as the ice sheets retreated from England 10,000 years ago. The huge flows of melting ice brought with them enormous quantities of the distinctive gravels that still occupy their beds.

Even though the plan is to build a viaduct over the river it is inevitable that damage will be caused to this rare stream and that pollution and rubbish from vehicles will have a detrimental impact on its future and the ecology within it.
