The Issue

For those of us who call the Sourland Mountain home, or find solace in its untouched beauty, the announcement of the planned hotel and restaurant development at Big Bear Gear is not just a disappointment—it is a threat. This verdant region in New Jersey, often referred to as the lungs of our community, provides critical natural resources, vital habitat for numerous species, and a peaceful retreat from urban life. Developing this section of the mountain will ruin the small, quiet, rural community that surrounds it.

Sourland Mountain is a unique, ecologically sensitive area that supports a diversity of wildlife and plant species. By covering this pristine land with asphalt and concrete, we risk irreparable damage to the landscape and the ecosystems that thrive here. The soil and vegetation of the Sourlands play a crucial role in carbon sequestration, flood prevention, and water filtration, not to mention the intrinsic value of its beauty and tranquility.

The proposed construction is mainly driven by external interests, with the property owned by non-residents looking to capitalize on neighboring Lambertville's popularity for profit. This brings to light pressing issues regarding community rights and the protection of public interest against proliferating commercial interests. Such non-essential developments ignore the long-term environmental costs, focusing on short-term economic gains while the local flora and fauna face destruction and displacement. This development comes at the cost of destroying the community West Amwell stands for.

There are effective, sustainable alternatives to reckless development. We urge local authorities and the developers to consider options that enhance, rather than degrade, the environment.  We ask the developers to withdraw their plan.

Let us stand together to protect Sourland Mountain from this unnecessary development. By signing this petition, you will be taking a stand to safeguard one of New Jersey’s vital natural treasures for future generations. You will be telling the developers and the local government that residents' needs come before outsider profits. You will be telling the developers that you do not, and will not, support their project.

Please sign this petition to halt the construction at Big Bear Gear and ensure a sustainable future for the Sourland Mountain region.
