Our ancestors, who built Stonehenge over 5,000 years ago, had no idea that the monument they constructed would become an enduring symbol of Britain's rich and varied history. Today, the awe-inspiring beauty of Stonehenge continues to remind us of the profound interconnectedness of humanity, culture, and nature. But now, this historic and sacred site is under threat. 

The UK Government has recently approved the construction of a two-mile tunnel and road-widening scheme near Stonehenge. The A303 project, initially costing £1.7 billion, aims to reduce journey times to the southwest of England. While it is undeniable that road improvements are essential to our modern life, the question we must ask ourselves is - at what cost?

This proposal was approved in defiance of the planning inspectors' recommendations, a move that previously led to the decision being overturned in the High Court. The inspectors warned us that these road works would cause "permanent, irreversible harm" to Stonehenge - a UNESCO World Heritage site cherished by millions around the globe. 

Stonehenge is more than just a collection of ancient stones; it's a testament to our ancestors' ingenuity, their respect for the cosmos, and their deep-seated spirituality. This prehistoric monument stands as a beacon of a time when the rhythms of nature were revered and integrated into daily life, a testament that has survived through millennia. It serves as a symbolic reminder of who we are, where we come from, and the indomitable spirit of humanity. 

We are not against progress or infrastructure improvements, but progress should never come at the expense of irreplaceable cultural heritage. We are a nation proud of our history, our heritage, and our cultural landmarks. These elements define us, remind us of our past, and guide our future. Stonehenge is more than just an archaeological site; it's a symbol of our collective memory and national identity.

We, therefore, call upon the UK Government to halt this planned development immediately. We implore you to reassess the potential long-lasting damage this project may inflict upon Stonehenge and to seek alternative routes or methods that would preserve the integrity of this timeless monument.
