The Issue

I live in Mercer County, Kentucky—a rural, agriculture-based community beloved for its rolling farmlands and tight-knit community spirit. Recently, we, the residents, have been blindsided by a proposed development that stands to threaten our way of life: the construction of a massive data center.

While technological advancements are indispensable, this development could bring devastating consequences to our community. One of the primary concerns is the environmental impact. Data centers require enormous amounts of electricity and water, leading to higher utility prices and an unsustainable drain on local resources. In our small town, these changes could significantly impact our day-to-day expenses, making living here much less affordable for many families.

Moreover, the proposed site for this data center is on prime agricultural land, land that has been farmed for generations. This means not just the loss of beautiful landscapes, but also a threat to our local agriculture economy—one of the few economic advantages our community holds. Displacing farmers not only strips them of their livelihoods but also dismantles the food supply chains that support our region.

We are realistic about the necessity for economic development but believe it should not come at the expense of our community’s core values and essential resources. There are alternatives, such as utilizing already developed areas or brownfields, which would minimize environmental damage and preserve our cherished rural landscapes.

The people of Mercer County deserve a say in decisions that impact our community's future. We demand our local and state government listen to its constituents and reconsider this development plan thoughtfully. Our voices must be heard and our land protected.

Sign this petition to stand with us against the construction of this data center. Help us preserve the rural integrity and agricultural strength of Mercer County.
