The Issue

The Cerne Giant is one of England’s oldest surviving hill figures: a scheduled ancient monument cut into the chalk, and a national treasure in the true sense. For centuries it has looked down on a small stone village, an abbey, Grade I listed buildings and open fields. Now one of those fields is under threat. That field is Simsay Fields. Thirty-four houses would go there — outside the village boundary line, inside the protected National Landscape — and the Giant would no longer watch over Cerne Abbas. It would watch over a housing estate. You cannot move the Giant. You can only spoil the land that gives it meaning.

Please join us in urging Dorset Council to reject this proposal. We need to protect our green spaces for future generations. Our fight is not just about opposing development; it’s about ensuring sustainable growth that respects our community and the environment.

Please sign this petition to show your opposition to development at Simsay Fields and to support the pursuit of more sustainable housing options.
