Stop the Closure of Quebec's Wildlife Sanctuaries
The Issue
Quebec needs more refuge and everything should be done to avoid closures and not the other way around. You can't imagine what our shelters in Quebec endure, it's often inhumane, and that's why we choose to help animals because it's surely not our government authorities that will do it. Believe me when I say that I have tried everything. After several calls to public health, and numerous emails with questions like: Can my family members help me, or can a volunteer who has private insurance assist me? I have come to realize that the issue goes deeper.
Once again, the Quebec government has shut down a sanctuary, this time Zoe’s Ark, citing false rabies concerns—just as New York State did with P’nut’s Freedom Farm. These sanctuaries provide a safe haven for both domestic and wild animals, playing a crucial role in wildlife rehabilitation and care. There are already humane live tests that can be used to diagnose rabies, eliminating the need for outdated practices like sampling brain tissue in 2025.
Vaccination efforts are reliable and effective, ensuring that once a person or animal is vaccinated, they cannot contract rabies. It's high time the authorities recognize this fact and stop the unnecessary shutdown of our wildlife rehabilitation centres. These closures not only jeopardize the welfare of animals but also undermine the tireless efforts of countless workers and volunteers dedicated to animal care and conservation across the province.
We're calling on the Quebec government to reassess their policies concerning wildlife sanctuaries and adopt modern, humane methods for diagnosing and preventing rabies. Let's work together to ensure the survival and prosperity of our sanctuaries, allowing them to continue their vital work without interruption. Your support is crucial in making this change happen.
Sign the petition to halt the closure of our sanctuaries and help protect our wildlife.
