Stop the Closure of Manresa Jesuit Spiritual Renewal Center in Pickering, ON

The Issue

Many are deeply saddened and concerned by the recent announcement that our beloved Manresa Jesuit Spiritual Renewal Center is facing closure.

For nearly 80 years, this center has served as a beacon of hope and healing for many within our community. On February 22nd, the Jesuits Of Canada announced their decision to close it following recommendations from their spirituality commission and province consultors.

"As a result of the impending closure, the Catholic retreat centre will no longer have access to the 21-acre property on Liverpool Road, effectively ending all weekend and day retreats for spiritual healing, as well as focused retreats for members of the Al-anon and Alcoholics Anonymous communities at the Pickering location." - Quote from Jesuits planning to close Manresa

This decision comes at a time when our community needs it most. Since Covid-19 lockdowns began, there has been an alarming increase in individuals struggling with substance abuse who desperately need places like this to reflect and recover.

We believe that preserving such vital spaces for spiritual growth is more important now than ever before.

The loss of the Manresa Center would be devastating to those seeking solace and guidance during these trying times. We urge The Jesuits Of Canada to reconsider their decision and explore alternative solutions that would allow the center to continue its invaluable service.

Please sign this petition if you believe in the importance of maintaining spaces for spiritual renewal within our communities. Your support could make all the difference in saving this cherished institution from closure. Intead of donating to this petition (Change.org), we kindly ask you to make a donation to support the retreat center directly at https://manresa-canada.ca/support-manresa/donate/ .
