“Stop the Closure of LA Animal Shelters – Protect Animals and Shelter Workers”

The Issue

To Mayor Karen Bass and the Los Angeles City Council,

We, the undersigned, urgently call on you to immediately halt the proposed closure of three Los Angeles animal shelters and the layoff of 92 essential shelter staff—a devastating move that threatens both the welfare of our city’s animals and the livelihoods of those who care for them.

Our shelter system is already operating beyond capacity. These cuts would push it into a full-blown crisis, resulting in more animals abandoned on the streets, fewer adoptions, increased suffering, and a tragic rise in euthanasia rates. These are not just statistics—these are living beings who deserve compassion, care, and a chance at lifeEliminating these vital resources is not a solution—it’s a moral failure. Dedicated shelter workers who serve on the frontlines of animal care will lose their jobs. Community members will lose a critical public service. And our neighborhoods will feel the impact as more stray, injured, and vulnerable animals are left with nowhere to go.

We implore you to reconsider this harmful proposal and explore alternative budget solutions that do not sacrifice the safety and dignity of innocent animals or the livelihoods of hardworking Angelenos. There are other paths forward—paths that protect both fiscal responsibility and the values of our city.

If these shelters close, countless dogs and cats will suffer and die. They will be left without sanctuary, without care, and without hope. The people of Los Angeles will not stand by while this happens.

Please—protect our shelters, our workers, and the animals who rely on them. Do the right thing.
