The Issue

It's deeply frustrating and disappointing for many students and families at Spring Hill Middle School who are unfairly penalized by the newly implemented clear water bottle policy. This policy mandates that students are only allowed to use clear water bottles while on school grounds. For students and families who have already invested in opaque, steel, or insulated thermostat water bottles, this rule is not only unfair but it's a waste of resources. It's frustrating for those who have spent their hard-earned money on these bottles, only to learn they can no longer use them due to this restriction.

Additionally, not every family has the financial ability to purchase new, clear water bottles just to comply with this policy. It places an undue financial burden on them. Punishing students for not having the 'right' type of water bottle is not just unfair; it's a hindrance to their learning environment.

Moreover, the alternative that the school offers—clear disposable plastic water bottles—poses a significant environmental concern. Our planet is already grappling with enormous plastic waste issues, and promoting plastic bottles only exacerbates this crisis. Schools should be at the forefront of encouraging sustainable practices, not forcing environmentally harmful alternatives.

Another issue is that the policy does not actually ensure the safety it claims to address. While water is clear, so are many other drinks, including some alcohol and flavored beverages. Simply requiring a clear bottle does not prevent students from bringing liquids other than water, making the rule ineffective in practice.

We propose that the school administration consider more inclusive and environmentally friendly policies. Allowing students to bring any kind of water bottle, while ensuring its contents are water, is a simple alternative. This would alleviate the financial stress on families, promote environmental responsibility, and create a more supportive learning environment.
