Good afternoon supporters. The Mayor going back on his word again is not at all surprising- given our recent experience. The compromise agreement he made with our County Supervisors in March to utilize the Science building as an intermittent weather respite center was suddenly no longer valid by late June- when he announced his 24/7 operation plans for the science center (a location as far away from downtown and the majority of the city’s homeless as possible).
We know he can’t be trusted to keep an agreement.
Sacramento Business groups are now experiencing the same outrage and anger with his duplicity. Quote from Mayor regarding the Conway plan below:
“You may not trust me, that I'm going to try to undermine you. I'm assuring you here in the public that I would support this as is tonight. I'm ready to do that tonight despite its imperfections.” Mayor Darrell Steinberg in April.

Yes! We DON’T trust you Mayor Steinberg. We don’t and we WON’T trust you. You have shown Sacramento that you can’t be trusted!
Read excerpt from letter written by Region BusinessJoshua Wood:
“With the Conway Plan polling at 71%, we began building a massive coalition and collecting thousands of signatures to get it on the November ballot.
When we were over half-way finished getting our signatures, the City leadership reached out. They asked for us to work with them to make some small amendments and in exchange they would place our measure on the ballot. This would mean saving the cost of paying to collect signatures, and more importantly, gaining buy-in from the City leaders who we would need to implement the measure effectively. In good faith, we worked with the City…and the Council voted 7-2 to place our measure on the ballot. We won! There was great excitement about the City Approved Conway Plan finally fixing our homeless situation.
However, within 24-hours of us rescinding our official petition (which we had to do per the agreement), the City began saying they were going to pull the City Approved Conway Plan from the ballot. We were shocked and angered! Then they changed their minds. They decided to add provisions to make the measure contingent upon a list of actions by Sacramento County (which they’ve been asking about for years and KNOW will not likely happen).
We oppose this proposal that the Council will hear on Tuesday to essentially kill the City Approved Conway Plan The idea of presenting a ballot measure to the voters of Sacramento that would give a false sense of hope and have zero impact is reprehensible. Instead, the City should keep its word and let the voters vote on the City Approved Conway Plan.
The City is Meeting Tuesday [tonight] at 6:00pm to hear this horrible change.”

So where does this leave our community-including the Children’s Receiving Home- as far as being neutral on the shelter site next door, which is contingent on it not affecting the safety of their kids- and for all of us? We heard Steinberg say something very similar to District 2 Councilmember Sean Loloee on June 26 before the vote on this:
Loloee: “One last question Mr. Mayor…at what point are we going to grade this facility as ‘it’s working great’ or ‘we’re having issues’? Is it after 30 days, 60 days, 90 days?”
Mayor Steinberg:
“It says quarterly in the resolution- but if you want to come back earlier, I will commit to you to come back earlier Councilmember Loloee…keep the resolution as it is, I will commit to you publicly here- bring it back in 30 days, let’s do a 30 day report.”
And what if the 30 day report shows that there have been negative impacts? Will he commit to mitigation for the CRH and our community? Can he be held accountable for what he assures promises and commits to?
Answer: The best predictor of future actions are past actions…which aren’t looking too good for us at this point based on the Mayor’s past.
Final thoughts we will leave you with can be summed up best in Conway’s comments below, quoted from Sac Bee article today https://amp.sacbee.com/news/local/article264312601.html
“The mayor, council and city manager need to get their priorities straight,” said Daniel Conway, the lead proponent of the measure, and chief of staff to former mayor Kevin Johnson. “They manage to always find millions to spend on pet projects. Now they are looking to break their promise to our community to finally step up on the number one issue in Sacramento — our city’s homelessness crisis.”
