I am Jorshua N. Hernández-Carrión, a wounded survivor of the Pulse Nightclub shooting. I was shot twice that night: once in my left arm and once in my torso. A bullet remains lodged in my body, a permanent reminder of the horror we endured. Today, I am calling for a boycott of the City of Orlando's Community Rainbow Run, sponsored by Orlando Health.

This fundraising event is a vestige of the exploitative, disgraced, and dissolved onePULSE Foundation. It continues the exploitation of the mass shooting that fractured our community. The City seeks to, once again, turn this tragedy into a money-making opportunity, funneling funds into its garish, over-the-top $12 million memorial—a memorial that disgustingly includes a visitor's center. The majority of survivors and victims' families do not want this. What we want is a respectful, simple, fiscally-responsible memorial that does not rely on fundraising schemes or the City's attempts to turn this massacre into a celebration.

I am not alone in this request. Dozens of wounded survivors and victims' family members stand with me, exhausted from watching the Pulse shooting be exploited—first by the onePULSE Foundation and now by the City of Orlando. The City's memorial has become about the legacies of Orlando’s failed politicians and will be one of the most expensive public relations campaigns Orlando taxpayers have ever had to fund.

The City is using this memorial to divert attention from the truth: the Pulse shooting left our community deeply divided, left holes in our hearts and our bodies, and left empty chairs at our dinner tables. This tragedy is not a time for rainbows, parties, marathons, and celebration. Also, that the City is culpable for the unpermitted renovations and code violations at PULSE that hindered escape and rescue. 

Pulse Remembrance Week should be a time of somber reflection on what was, at the time, the deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history.

We need to bring humanity back to Orlando. Any fundraising efforts tied to the Pulse shooting should go toward the ongoing support and care of survivors who are still struggling with medical bills and basic human needs as a result of this heinous crime. We cannot allow the City to rewrite history and seize the narrative. A mass shooting should not be turned into a celebration.

This re-victimizes survivors and erases the real harm and violence we suffered. The money collected does not help us in any way, but actually empowers the City’s exploitation of the massacre.

Please support victims and survivors by BOYCOTTING the City of Orlando's Community Rainbow Run, sponsored by Orlando Health. Tell city officials and Orlando Health executives top cancel the Community Rainbow Run. They have ignored our pleas for the second year in a row. This event is being organized by the same people who stood by the now-dissolved onePULSE Foundation, allowing Pulse owner Barbara Poma to walk away from this massacre with millions of dollars, even as she faced a lawsuit from victims and survivors for premises liability and security negligence.

Enough with the exploitation. Enough with the lies. Stand with us.

STOP THE COMMUNITY RAINBOW RUN DE LA CIUDAD DE ORLANDO, PATROCINADA POR ORLANDO HEALTH

Soy Jorshua N. Hernández-Carrión, un sobreviviente herido del tiroteo de Pulse Nightclub. Me dispararon dos veces esa noche: una en el brazo izquierdo y otra en el torso. Una bala permanece alojada en mi cuerpo, un recordatorio permanente del horror que soportamos. Hoy, estoy pidiendo un boicot a la Comunidad Rainbow Run de la ciudad de Orlando, patrocinada por Orlando Health.

Este evento de recaudación de fondos es un vestigio de la explotadora, deshonrada y disuelta Fundación onePULSE. Continúa la explotación del tiroteo masivo que fracturó a nuestra comunidad. La ciudad busca, una vez más, convertir esta tragedia en una oportunidad para ganar dinero, canalizando fondos hacia su monumento llamante y exagerado de 12 millones de dólares, un monumento que repugnantemente incluye un centro de visitantes. La mayoría de los sobrevivientes y las familias de las víctimas no quieren esto. Lo que queremos es un memorial respetuoso, simple y fiscalmente responsable que no dependa de los planes de recaudación de fondos o de los intentos de la Ciudad de convertir esta masacre en una celebración.

No estoy solo en esta solicitud. Docenas de sobrevivientes heridos y familiares de las víctimas están conmigo, agotados de ver cómo explotaba el tiroteo de Pulse, primero por la Fundación onePULSE y ahora por la ciudad de Orlando. El monumento de la ciudad se ha convertido en los legados de los políticos fracasados de Orlando y será una de las campañas de relaciones públicas más costosas que los contribuyentes de Orlando han tenido que financiar.

La ciudad está usando este monumento para desviar la atención de la verdad: el tiroteo de Pulse dejó a nuestra comunidad profundamente dividida, dejó agujeros en nuestros corazones y nuestros cuerpos, y dejó sillas vacías en nuestras mesas. Esta tragedia no es un momento para arcoíris, fiestas, maratones y celebraciones. Además, que la Ciudad es culpable de las renovaciones no permitidas y las violaciones del código en PULSE que obstaculizaron el escape y el rescate.

La Semana del Recuerdo del Pulso debería ser un momento de sombría reflexión sobre lo que fue, en ese momento, el tiroteo masivo más mortífero en la historia de los Estados Unidos.

Necesitamos traer a la humanidad de vuelta a Orlando. Cualquier esfuerzo de recaudación de fondos vinculado al tiroteo de Pulse debe destinarse al apoyo y cuidado continuos de los sobrevivientes que todavía están luchando con las facturas médicas y las necesidades humanas básicas como resultado de este atroz crimen. No podemos permitir que la Ciudad reescriba la historia y se apodere de la narrativa. Un tiroteo masivo no debería convertirse en una celebración.

Esto vuelve a victimizar a los sobrevivientes y borra el daño y la violencia reales que sufrimos. El dinero recaudado no nos ayuda de ninguna manera, pero en realidad potencia la explotación de la masacre por parte de la Ciudad.

Por favor, apoye a las víctimas y sobrevivientes BOICOTEANDO la Comunidad Rainbow Run de la Ciudad de Orlando, patrocinada por Orlando Health. Diga a los funcionarios de la ciudad y a los ejecutivos de Orlando Health que cancelen la Community Rainbow Run. Han ignorado nuestras súplicas por segundo año consecutivo. Este evento está siendo organizado por las mismas personas que apoyaron la ahora disuelta Fundación onePULSE, permitiendo que la propietaria de Pulse, Barbara Poma, se aleje de esta masacre con millones de dólares, incluso cuando se enfrentó a una demanda de víctimas y sobrevivientes por responsabilidad de las instalaciones y negligencia de seguridad.
