Stop the The Development of Downtown Burlington

The Issue

SAVE THE QUAINTNESS OF DOWNTOWN BURLINGTON

Last week, the City of Burlington Council voted 6 -1 in favour of building a SECOND condominium building on Brant St. and James St.

Reserve Properties Ltd. has submitted a 24-storey development application for a piece of property spanning 401, 403, 405, 409, 411 and 413 Brant St., 444, 448 and 450 John St., and 2002 and 2012 James St.

A plan for a 23-storey highrise tower, adjacent to the property, on Brant Street, was approved by council in November 2017. One of this city's most iconic heritage buildings, Kelly’s Bake Shoppe, is located at 401 Brant St.

The shoppe brings in about 12,000 people to the Burlington downtown core. It is so much more than just a bake shoppe, it is a place that connects people from all over the world and allows them to escape if just for a moment to a place they feel at home (because it's allergy friendly).

If this plan goes through, Kelly's Bake Shoppe will not be what it once was, and neither will the City of Burlington.

The final decision (by Council) will be at the public Council Meeting Monday, July 16th at 6:30pm at Burlington City Hall.

Goal: 2,000 Signatures (let's get more!)

Responded
Hi everyone! Thanks so much for your advocacy for retaining the heritage building that Kelly’s Bake Shoppe operates in. We need to keep our unique retailers like her in our downtown core. I brought a motion to cap the height at 3 storeys along Brant, rising to 11 storeys facing John St. That failed 6-1. The mayor brought a motion to approve the 18 storey building (17 plus rooftop) recommended by staff. That passed 5-2, with myself and the Ward 4 councillor also opposed. This comes to council Mon. July 16, 6:30pm. Residents can register (by noon on Monday) to speak, or submit written comments. Link here to register: https://www.burlington.ca/en/your-city/delegation-registration.asp I encourage everyone to share your input with all of council, especially those who voted in support of the redevelopment, which is ultimately pushing Kelly’s out - she can’t stay there during construction and likely can’t move back in years later with higher rents. Best way to save Kelly’s is with a scaled back development - 3-11 storeys that I proposed - that will allow her to remain, possibly through construction depending how it is done.
