Black Bear photos- courtesy of Jon from J&G Photography. We are Blessed to have the photographers , who dedicate the beautiful Bear photos and narratives. Their mission is to educate. And replace the fear and misconceptions about the Bears with facts and truth. There are many posts on the Wilderness Warriors-Oklahoma page. I have also learned so much from Bill Lea, who I believe is physically sick now and no longer posting. Please visit our page or their photography page. You will receive an insight on these majestic creatures. Unlike you may have known before. Bears.org is also a great research site, that will answer every question, you might have about our Black Bears. The more you know about our Black Bears, the greater the love you will gain for them. And together- we become a mighty voice. Ordinary people, like you and me. Gathered together in 2014. We couldn’t stop the first Bear Hunt in Florida in 2015. The first hunt in 20 years. But we worked together through 2015 and stopped the Bear Hunt of 2016. There hasn’t been a hunt called since.
I went before the Oklahoma Fish and Wildlife in 2018. I spoke in protest of the Black Bear Hunt. They lied and said they had a compact with the Choctaw Nation to Bear Hunt. The Choctaw Nation denied them having a compact about the Bears with the State. In 2022 a US Supreme Court decision McGirt vs Oklahoma came down. A mighty win for the reaffirmation of 5 Tribes including the Choctaws, still being a Reservation. I felt this was a perfect time, to approach the Choctaw Nation. The Choctaw Nation had severed all fishing and hunting compacts with the State. And writing their own rules. Through my calls and letters. I had hoped the Bears would be excluded from our hunts. It would be a big step forward in stopping the State of Oklahoma Bear Hunts on our Reservation land. The fish and hunting rules of the Choctaw Nation- only apply to Choctaw members. It went nowhere. The Choctaw Nation was not going to stop the State of Oklahoma from Bear Hunting on our Reservation, where most of the Bears live. Reservation status gave them the right to exclude the State from control over our reservation. They have instead, joined forces with the State Department of Fish & Wildlife to jointly carry out the impending 2023 Bear Hunts. Archery season starts October 1st without a quota of Bears allowed to be killed. They can kill as many Bears as they have arrows to shoot with. There is only an estimated 1300 Bears in the Ouachita forest. ( pronounced Washita, a 3 1/2 million acre mountain forest.) Where most of the Bears live.
Learn as much as you can about our Black Bears. The greatest knowledge against this hunt is Bear Reproduction. Embryonic Diapause or Delayed Implantation. Most any other kind of hunt. They can claim, without a hunt, the population would be too great. Nature gifted our Bears with a very unique reproductive population control. Choctaw Nation claim Oklahoma Bears get pregnant in June. All other science reports say July or August. So the fact is, in the summer, they get pregnant. The embryo is suspended and will not implant unless, the Mother Bear has consumed enough additional body weight to carry a pregnancy. This will be determined before denning time, which is usually about December. If her body weight is insufficient because of a shortage of food supply in her area. She will miscarry and no embryos will be implanted. So the Bears regulate their own population control. Man is not needed. God and nature has designed them beautifully.
I don’t know if this video created by Jon of J&G Photography will post. But it is powerful. The beauty of the Bears life. Until Hunting season starts. And the cruelty and barbarism against them starts. It is on the Wilderness Warriors-Oklahoma page.
