Please keep in mind- i am trying to keep a level headed approach and calm approach, but I am angry that we could very much be losing such a special place.
Hummingbird House is more than just a place; it’s a beacon of hope for many families in Queensland, Australia. As the only children's hospice in the region, it provides a sanctuary for children diagnosed with life-limiting illnesses and offers an oasis of support for their families. The unique services offered here, including tailored grief counseling and family support, have provided lifelines to parents and siblings struggling through the unimaginable realities of loss, grief, and illness.
Recently, vital changes and potential closures threaten this sanctuary. These modifications risk dismantling the core services that many families have come to rely on during their most challenging times. Hummingbird House was built with love and dedicated to offering comprehensive support to children and families navigating difficult journeys. The heart and soul of this facility must be preserved to continue its mission as it was originally envisioned.
It’s imperative to remember what Hummingbird House stands for. The facility’s holistic approach ensures that every child and every family receives the compassionate care they need, making it a unique and indispensable resource. Cutting back on services or closing parts of this beloved hospice will leave countless families without a refuge.
Hummingbird House has historically been a pillar of strength, offering comfort through its unparalleled services. For countless families, it has been the bedrock that has provided support during emotional and trying times. The importance of maintaining the integrity of these services cannot be overstated.
We urge decision-makers to reconsider these changes and work with the community to restore Hummingbird House to its original state, where it can function without limitations, burdens, or barriers. The families of Queensland deserve access to full services that Hummingbird House was meant to provide.
We call on all community members, supporters of children’s health services, and those who understand the importance of holistic and compassionate care to stand with us. Let us come together to ensure that Hummingbird House continues to serve as a beacon of light for those in their darkest hours.
Please sign this petition and join us in the fight to protect Hummingbird House, to keep its doors open, and to preserve the vital services it provides. Together, we can make sure that no family in Queensland faces their hardest journey alone.
What we are asking Wesley Mission Queensland to do
The parents’ group is calling on Wesley Mission Queensland, as operator of Hummingbird House, to:
1. Meet with families urgently (including bereaved parents and current families) to explain recent staffing changes and service impacts, and to establish a genuine consultation process and information sharing about the service moving forward.
2. Restore key family support capability, including the reappointment of the Family and Community Support Manager. This manager has been pivotal in coordinating end-of-life care and bereavement support for so many families since the house first opened.
3. Provide transparency including involving families in an audit about how fundraising and government funding are being translated into frontline service delivery, staffing stability, and quality care outcomes. Families want clarity on sustainability and workforce planning.
4. Return service quality to previous levels, ensuring families can rely on consistent respite, end-of-life care, bereavement support and specialist multidisciplinary services.
