The Issue

Living in the tranquil surroundings of our beloved community has been a source of joy and solace for all of us. We're blessed with picturesque views, vibrant wildlife, and a thriving environment that nurtures not just the land but also our spirits. However, an imminent threat looms over our peaceful living -- the proposed construction of the Camino Madre wind turbine farm near our precious community..

It's important to acknowledge the global significance of renewable energy, but the location of this wind farm poses serious concerns. The towering structures not only threaten to mar our beautiful landscape, but they also jeopardize local wildlife habitats including hunting grounds in one of Arizona’s most desirable areas. Birds and bats, and big game are crucial components of our ecosystem, are particularly at risk due to the presence of these massive turbines.

Moreover, there are growing apprehensions about the health implications. Studies have indicated that the low-frequency noise generated by wind turbines can have adverse effects on human health, including sleep disturbance, heart health, and increased stress levels. This constitutes a direct threat to our community's well-being.

Additionally, it would require taking limited valuable resources, such as water from our fragile aquifers. We would lose our beloved Dark Sky community. Fire risk would increase in an already very vulnerable wildfire area. Traffic and noise from construction would increase monumentally, as it is very little currently. Zoning, exemptions, variances, and easements, that circumvent the current ones that we must follow,  would likely be granted to the project. Loss of property value would be inevitable. Short term financial gains would mostly be made by those not directly affected, but the burden would be placed on those adjacent to the project. Decommissioning at end of life has been a proven disaster. There are no long term gains. Zero benefit to us, yet all of the burden. Additionally, if approved this project would likely be a stepping stone to others just like it, and likely not limited to wind and solar, but possibly AI Data Centers. This is affecting us and other rural communities throughout AZ. This will continue to spread like wildfire if not extinguished now. If not it will spread to other real communities causing them the same problems and burden.

What we propose is simple and realistic: relocation of the wind farm to a less intrusive area. There are vast expanses far away from residential settings where such projects can be beneficially sited without endangering communities or ecosystems.

We implore the authorities to reconsider the current proposal and engage with our community to find an acceptable solution. Protecting our homes, environment, and quality of life is paramount. This project is inconsistent with the rural ranching character of Seligman, threatens private property rights and peaceful enjoyment of property, may negatively affect property values, wildlife, scenic viewsheds, and public safety, and therefore should not receive approval.

At this time, no formal application has been submitted to the county for this project. They were given permission last year to put up four towers whose only function was to measure the wind. Camino Madre has been in for a preliminary meeting with the planning department in March. I know they have been doing some community outreach and will have a community meeting at the Seligman High School on June 25th from 4-6 PM. I encourage all residents to be there and I will be attending myself. Thank you for your letter.
