The Issue

I've always felt a deep connection to books. They are more than just bound pages; they are gateways to different worlds, sources of knowledge, and tools for personal growth. Recently, I've noticed a disturbing trend - the banning of books. Some of these banned books are not just great reads but also rich in knowledge and themes that stimulate intellectual growth.

This issue is particularly prevalent with LGBT-themed books but extends beyond them to other genres as well. This is an affront to intellectual freedom and our right to access information freely. According to the American Library Association (ALA), there were 377 challenges to library, school, and university materials in 2019 alone (ALA's Office for Intellectual Freedom). This number is alarmingly high considering that many cases go unreported.

In addition, this petition aims at establishing little free libraries for kids who want unrestricted access to reading material. Reading should be encouraged from an early age as it boosts cognitive development among children (American Academy of Pediatrics). However, book bans limit their exposure only to certain types of literature which can hinder their overall development.

We urge policymakers not only stop banning books but also take proactive steps towards promoting intellectual freedom by building free libraries accessible by all children regardless of their background or preferences.

The future generations deserve better than a world where literature is censored based on bias or prejudice. Let's stand together against book banning and promote intellectual freedom instead! Please sign this petition if you believe in the power of words and the right everyone has over them!
