The Issue

My grandma is frequently in and out of the hospital, and it's crucial for me to stay connected so I can offer help when it's needed most. I constantly juggle various responsibilities at home, and my parents expect to be updated about my day-to-day activities. Phones provide a literal lifeline, keeping me informed about emergencies, whether they occur at school or at home. What if there’s an emergency at school? A school shooting? A bomb threat? Or anything else like that? Phones are needed to keep our loved ones close. In an age where anxiety and fear of missing out are pervasive, access to phones can offer reassurance and peace of mind.

Recently, a bill was passed by the governor that bans the use of phones in schools across Texas. This is a concerning development as it overlooks the vital role that phones play in ensuring student safety and communication in today's world. Proponents of the ban argue that phones are a distraction; however, emergency protocols, parental communications, and real-time updates can all be handled efficiently through smart devices, ensuring safety without compromising educational focus.

Statistics show that 95% of American teenagers own a smartphone and rely on their devices for important information and immediacy in communication which, when used responsibly, can aid rather than hinder educational experiences (source: Pew Research Center). The elimination of this tool could isolate students from familial support, critical during both personal and public emergencies.

Rather than overall bans, schools could establish comprehensive phone usage policies aimed at promoting responsible technology use during instructional time while allowing access during non-instructional periods. This balances the need for focus with the necessity for safety and communication. And that’s if anything. In my opinion this looks like abuse of power, and it should be up to the districts and individual schools to choose what they do with cell phones. There is absolutely NO need for a STATE wide bill to be passed for this “issue”.

Urge Texas legislators to reconsider the sudden and drastic ban on phones in schools. Together, let's seek solutions that will uphold safety and connectivity while respecting educational integrity. Sign this petition to oppose the recent bill and advocate for pragmatic phone usage policies in Texas schools.
