My daughter Lea is 4.5 years old and suffers from a very rare condition called Rett-Syndrome. She needs gene therapy to live a longer and better life. In the current Trump administration, scientists are being fired from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and gene therapy programs are being stopped. This has a direct impact on the life of my daughter and many other people who rely on this form of therapy. According to Nature (2018), gene therapies have the potential to combat thousands of previously untreatable diseases. They can be used to make changes to genetic material in order to treat or even cure such diseases. Stopping gene therapies and firing qualified FDA scientists hinders the development and approval of new, life-saving therapies.
