The Issue

In recent months, we learned that the city of Independence, Missouri has been in talks with Nebius to establish an AI datacenter in the city. While technological advancements are crucial, the construction of this facility brings with it a host of concerns that must be addressed before any further actions are taken. This isn't just about technology; it's about transparency, community involvement, and corporate responsibility.

The residents of Independence have been kept in the dark regarding the full implications of this project. Many of the sessions to ask questions have been during working hours, making it hard for citizens to ask questions and share concerns. There also has not been an environmental study conducted to assess the impact on the community.

Equally troubling is the prospect of significant corporate tax breaks. The agreed to on PILOTS in lieu of taxes is unfair to the residents of our city. If this project is truly sustainable they should be able to operate paying their fair share particularly when reaping substantial profits and contributing the the pollution of our city.

There has been no public approval for this datacenter. In a democracy, the voices of the people must be heard and respected. A project of this magnitude, with such direct impact on our community, demands a public forum where residents can ask questions, express concerns, and ultimately, approve or reject the proposal based on complete and factual data.

Research shows the dangers of AI datacenters to communities. The proposed location is close to many neighborhoods and schools.

By signing this petition, you are advocating for a stop to the construction plans and for city council to vote no on approval of Chapter 100, the plan for the Nebius Datacenter.

Lets work together to ensure that any developments in our community align with the values and interests of the people who live here.
