Stop the AI Datacenter construction in Nova Scotia

The Issue

The decision to construct an AI Datacenter in Nova Scotia isn't just an issue of technological advancement—it's a decision that significantly impacts our environment, our power grid, and our community at large. From the outset, I sensed this was a decision with deeply troubling implications.

The environmental impacts of such a massive data facility are profound. Data centers are known to consume enormous amounts of energy and water, often leaving a substantial carbon footprint. According to U.S. Department of Energy estimates, data centers can use up to 200 terawatt-hours (TWh) annually, which is about 2% of the total global electricity consumption. In a region like Nova Scotia, where we are actively striving to preserve our natural landscapes and transition to more sustainable practices, this is a step in the wrong direction.

Moreover, the increased demand on our power utilities cannot be overlooked. Our current infrastructure may struggle to meet the power needs of such a facility without affecting local residents' energy supplies and further driving up utility costs. During peak operational phases, AI datacenters will not only draw significant energy but also compete for resources, potentially affecting residential and small business users.

This datacenter is poised to benefit a select few while the costs are disproportionately shared by Nova Scotians. We must scrutinize who truly benefits from such projects and weigh these against long-term impacts on our environment and economy. To move forward constructively, we urge the government and corporations behind these projects to explore more sustainable digital infrastructure, such as investing in small-scale local data solutions and improving energy efficiency in existing tech operations.

Let us come together to protect the integrity of our beloved region. The short-term economic boosts cannot overshadow the lasting environmental and societal costs. Please join me in calling upon the authorities in Nova Scotia to halt the approval and construction of the proposed AI Datacenter. Sign this petition to put our planet and community before profits.
