Coyotes,
Because of your loud, undeniable pressure over the last few weeks, we forced the administration to blink.
After initially shutting down student oversight, the Campus Fee Advisory Committee (CFAC) was able to reconvene for an emergency meeting two days ago. In that meeting, CFAC voted 71% AGAINST the proposed $300 IRA fee increase.
Is this a victory?
It is a great milestone, but the fight is not officially over.
Historically, university administrations use the quiet months of the summer when the student body is off-campus and unorganized to quietly pass controversial policies. Even though it would now mean acting against an independent committee, there is still no absolute guarantee that the President's Cabinet won't try to force this 150% fee hike through to cover the Athletics deficit.
What happens now?
We have done exactly what a student body is supposed to do.
- We exposed the un-democratic "Alternative Consultation" survey.
- We uncovered the $5 million Athletics audit deficit.
- We obtained nearly 600 signatures in a matter of 3 weeks.
- We delivered a comprehensive, fully-cited letter to President Morales, the CSU Chancellor’s Office, the Audit Office, local media, and our campus faculty and union representatives.
The paper trail is undeniable. The administration knows that the students, the faculty, and the state are watching them.
As we have done the most we can right now, I hope everyone will enjoy their summer break and be able to take a moment to recharge and relax. If the administration tries to bypass CFAC over the summer, the student body now has the blueprint to fight back in the fall.
This is not a victory yet, but as of now we must rely on our student representatives and faculty government to keep the administration in line. Keep your eyes open, check your student emails over the summer, and stay up to date, but let those who represent us take it from here. If any major changes occur that necessitate our response, I will post another update here.
Thank you to every single person who canvassed, voted NO on the survey, signed this petition, and spoke up.
