Stop Terrorist Charities. HR 6408. Law to Suspend Tax-Exempt Status of Terrorist Orgs
The Issue
I, like many others, believe in the power of charity. We donate our hard-earned money to causes we believe in, hoping to make a difference. However, it is disheartening and alarming when these funds are misused by organizations that support terrorism under the guise of charity.
House Bill H.R. 6408 will help terminate the tax-exempt status of terrorist supporting organizations.
https://www.congress.gov/bill/118th-congress/house-bill/6408
This bipartisan bill is co-sponsored by Congressman Brad Schneider's (D-IL). It passed the House with a bipartisan vote of 382-11.
In the United States alone, there are over 1.5 million registered non-profit organizations (USAFACTS.org). While most of these organizations work towards noble causes, some exploit their tax-exempt status to fund illegal activities. The Global Terrorism Index 2024 reported an increase in terrorism in various parts of the world despite global efforts to combat it (Institute for Economics & Peace).
It's time we take a stand against this abuse. We need legislation that suspends the tax-exempt status of any organization found supporting terrorist activities. This will not only deter such actions but also ensure that our donations are used for their intended purpose - helping those in need.
We urge U.S. Senators to pass this bill to address this issue promptly. Your signature can help protect charitable giving from being exploited by those with malicious intent. Please sign this petition today.
SUMMARY OF BILL:
This bill suspends the tax-exempt status of a terrorist supporting organization. The bill defines terrorist supporting organization as any organization designated as having provided (during the three-year period prior to its designation) material support or resources to a terrorist organization in excess of a de minimis amount.
The Department of the Treasury must provide notice to such an organization of its impending designation and an opportunity to cure. Treasury must rescind a designation that it determines was erroneous or if the organization did not receive notice of designation.
