Stop tariffs on foreign giant monster movies

The Issue

The original Godzilla film holds a special place in my heart. Not only is it a cinematic masterpiece, but it is also an important cultural artifact that serves as a stark warning against the reckless testing and use of atomic weapons. The repercussions of such actions—sickness and death—are issues that continue to haunt us to this day.

Sadly, films like Godzilla and other giant monster movies originating from foreign countries are currently subjected to tariffs when imported to the United States. These films are not merely entertainment; they are vivid narratives that reflect cultural lessons, historical experiences, and societal fears from around the globe. By placing tariffs on them, we hinder cultural exchange and understanding, depriving audiences of the chance to learn globally significant lessons encapsulated in these films.

The world of cinema is a portal to experiencing landscapes, emotions, and narratives far beyond our own daily lives. The inclusion of foreign films enriches this world and brings diverse perspectives to American audiences. Imposing tariffs on these films only serves to restrict the flow of cultural and artistic expression.

The economy of film is already burdened with multiple financial strains, and adding tariffs is an unnecessary weight that could prevent these valuable films from reaching our screens. According to the Motion Picture Association, the global box office revenue for foreign films has been diminishing, which can be partly attributed to these heavy tariff barriers. Yet, eliminating tariffs would not only allow more diversity in what we watch but also support international filmmakers and promote cultural diplomacy.

I urge authorities to reconsider the tariff policies against foreign films, specifically those within the giant monster genre, to help preserve their cultural significance and make them accessible to a broader audience.

Please join me in advocating for the removal of tariffs on foreign giant monster movies. Help bring these poignant cultural narratives into our theatres and hearts by signing this petition.
