There are renewed calls for a ban on greyhound racing after a greyhound suffered an horrendous fall during a race at Limerick Stadium yesterday evening.
3-year-old greyhound Gleesons Dream hit the trackside rail at the first bend and could be seen tumbling head over heals. Video footage of the incident can be seen at https://youtu.be/0hZLFd0N7o0?t=16
The awful fall was described by the race commentator as “a spot of trouble” and as the race continued, he added that the dog was “out of the reckoning”.
The race results show that Gleesons Dream “did not finish”, suggesting an injury. His fate remains unknown.
Limerick Stadium (headquarters of the Irish Greyhound Board) is one of the worst tracks for injuries and deaths. In the past four years alone, 202 greyhounds suffered injuries there and 59 were killed by a track vet. In 2018, it stood as the worst track, with 58 injuries and 15 deaths. At tracks around Ireland in the same four year period, 1,559 greyhounds sustained injuries and 506 were killed.
How many more dogs have to suffer before the Irish Government announces an end to the state funding that is keeping this cruel industry afloat?

RTE is currently considering whether or not it will broadcast the semi-final and final of the 2019 Boylesports Irish Greyhound Derby. With thousands of greyhounds killed every year - which RTE itself exposed - it is unthinkable that the station would ever again include greyhound racing in its "sports" coverage.
