The Irish Independent is being urged to stop sponsoring greyhound racing at a track where dogs suffer and die. In 2016, the newspaper announced a 3-year sponsorship of the Laurels race at Cork's Curraheen Park track. This sponsorship deal continues until next month when the 2018 Laurels final is due to take place. In an appeal to the Independent not to renew the sponsorship, ICABS highlighted that there is much suffering and death at Curraheen Park. In the past three years alone, over a thousand dogs have suffered injuries at tracks around Ireland and 385 were killed by track vets. This includes 69 injuries and 23 deaths at Curraheen Park. In addition, an estimated 10,000 greyhounds go missing each year, presumed killed when found to be too slow to win races. One Irish trainer remarked online: "I've seen dogs being shot. It has to be done as there's too many of them to rehome." A former chairman of the Irish Greyhound Board admitted on Cork's 96 FM that he believes it is "absolutely" okay for thousands of dogs to be killed and that racing couldn't exist without the destruction of dogs. If the the suffering and killing of dogs at Curraheen Park doesn't concern the Irish Independent, perhaps it will consider the substantial negative publicity its brand was associated with after a greyhound tested positive for cocaine at the 2017 Irish Independent Laurels race.
