STOP Split Classes NOW: Fair Learning for ALL Ontario Students!
The Issue
As parents and educators, we have witnessed firsthand the negative impact of split classes in Ontario schools. A split class is a classroom that combines students from two different grade levels, such as a Grade 1/2 class, where older and younger students learn together. While this arrangement can sometimes be beneficial, it often poses significant challenges that can adversely affect students' educational experiences.
At the start of the school year, my child and three other Grade 2 students were unexpectedly placed into a Grade 1/2 split class with 16 younger students. The school provided no clear explanation for this decision neither to a students or parents, instead shifting the blame to the School Board, which also failed to offer any reasoning. This lack of transparency, combined with a disregard for the unique educational needs of students, is unacceptable.
While schools may argue that split classes are necessary due to resource constraints or fluctuating student populations, the reality is that these arrangements often lead to uneven attention from teachers, confusion among students, and emotional distress. In a split class, teachers must divide their focus between two curricula, which can result in less individualized instruction. This environment can hinder students' academic and emotional growth, leaving them feeling unsupported and overwhelmed.
Research shows that Ontario has one of the highest teacher-student ratios in Canada, and the trend of increasing split classes is a direct consequence of insufficient resources. This situation compromises the quality of education that our children receive, as they are not afforded the focused and personalized attention they need to thrive.
We believe that every child deserves a fair and supportive education system that prioritizes their needs over administrative convenience. Therefore, we urge the Ontario Ministry of Education to eliminate split classes and collaborate with educators, parents, and administrators to create classroom structures that provide equal educational opportunities for all students.
Sign this petition to ensure that no child's education is compromised by inadequate classroom organization. Together, we can advocate for a better learning environment that fosters the growth and development of every student.
