The Issue

Every day, it feels like someone is trying to stress us out. Now, SpaceX wants to build an aircraft in our own Vermilion Parish. My name is Shanna Glee, and as an environmental scientist and resident of Louisiana, I'm here to speak out. This project isn't just about some numbers on a spreadsheet. It's about our home, our land, and our wildlife. Vermilion Parish, with its coastal marshes, is such a rich habitat. It's where we see crawfish farms, American alligators, blue crabs, and the whooping cranes that have finally returned. And yet, we're facing the construction of a massive SpaceX aircraft that could disrupt everything we hold dear.

When you look at the plan, SpaceX wants to cover a staggering 125,000 acres in Vermilion parish. That's 12% of the entire parish, and it will significantly impact our natural resources and habitats. Even if they promise not to touch certain areas and fund restoration projects, the potential for harm is clear. This project will rely heavily on natural gas and water for its operations, posing risks like runoff, chemical contamination, and broader ecological damage.

I get it; it’s easy to feel overwhelmed and think, 'What can we do?' But remember, this project isn't finalized. Permits and approvals are still pending, meaning we have a chance to make our voices heard. An Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) will involve public input, which is our opportunity to challenge and scrutinize SpaceX’s plans. We need to stay informed and involved, whether that’s by turning to newspapers or online resources, or engaging with grassroots communities.

Vermilion Parish’s ecosystem is important not just for us, but for countless species that rely on it. By standing together, we can emphasize that our environment isn't just some backdrop for economic pursuits. It's our life, our culture, and our responsibility. Let's hold onto the power we have to protect it by voicing our opposition before any irrevocable changes begin.

Join me in preserving Vermilion Parish by signing this petition. Together, we can ensure that its beauty and biodiversity aren't sacrificed for an aircraft. Our earth needs us as much as we need it. Sign now to hold SpaceX accountable and put the brakes on this potentially destructive venture in Louisiana.
