STOP Solitary Confinement and mistreatment in the psychward

The Issue

Here in winnipeg, our hospitals and psychwards have a solitary confinement room used to treat people who are having a mental breakdown/ just needing a place to stay before being admitted into the psychward. These rooms have nothing in them, except for a tiny mattress on the ground. It is against human rights and will make mental health extremely worse. Very unethical, most of these patients want comfort and a break from stress.

Involuntary placement is when you were forced to be placed in a psychward, you didn't have a choice. I was wrongfully convicted of having psychosis, without anyone actually knowing me petitioning i had psychosis, I was put into a solitary confinement room, and was told by the first psychiatrist that assessed me that I did not have psychosis. I was an adult already. That only made my mental health extremely worse, and for so many other patients there as well. And so what if I did need it? I still wasn't treated properly. We have to be given permission to go outside. Walking, hearing the birds, smelling the fresh air helps a lot of people with their mental health. It doesn't help when you're in a small space ( I didn't have my own room for my whole time there) no given activities, no one to really talk to ( there's only 5 to 10  minute conversations with the psychiatrist). The places haven't been up to date, they're falling apart, and it's a scary looking place in general. I was in a unit with males as a female, and was touched and molested a few times at the psychward.

If you know someome or have mental health issues, you'd want the best for them. Their safety matters. You would never want all of their rights to feel taken away ( which it definitely has for many)

I would like to raise awareness and bring justice to our friends and family who suffer from mental health and don't get the proper support. I'd also like support with making our government and hospitals aware of this inhumane treatment.
